Malawian striker Gabadinho Mhango has finally broken his silence on the collapse of his potential move to Kaizer Chiefs, a transfer that seemed set to happen in 2023 but unexpectedly fell through at the last minute.
Close to Joining Kaizer Chiefs
Mhango, now playing for Marumo Gallants, had hoped to make the leap to Chiefs during the 2023 transfer window, a time when the Soweto club was desperately in need of a reliable centre-forward.
With Caleb Bimenyimana set to leave and Ashley Du Preez as the only real attacking option, Chiefs had been actively pursuing strikers.
However, despite intense interest, they only managed to secure one new signing, Ranga Chivaviro, from Marumo Gallants.
The 32-year-old, who was with AmaZulu FC at the time, had already traveled from Durban to Johannesburg in anticipation of finalizing the deal.
But to his disappointment, things took a sudden turn.
Mhango Speaks Out on the Unexpected Breakdown
Reflecting on the missed opportunity, Mhango expressed his frustration and confusion, revealing just how close he came to joining the club.
“It wasn’t just talk; I was about to go to Chiefs, and then things turned around.
Up to now, I don’t even know what happened,” he said.
“I was at AmaZulu, and I actually traveled from Durban to Joburg to complete the move.
I was happy that I was going to be at Chiefs, but then things happened.
I was looking forward to it, but at the end of the day, I was disappointed as it failed to happen.
However, I am loving the game and the place where I ended up,” Mhango added.
Finding New Hope at Marumo Gallants
After the failed Chiefs transfer, Mhango moved to Moroka Swallows on a free transfer in August 2023.
Unfortunately, Swallows disbanded, leaving Mhango to find a new home at Marumo Gallants.
Despite the setbacks, Mhango has been able to rediscover his form, scoring three goals and providing one assist in 14 matches. His main focus now is helping Gallants secure their place in the Betway Premiership..
Currently sitting in 13th place with 15 points, Gallants are seven points clear of the first relegation spot.
Did Chiefs Miss an Opportunity?
Now that Mhango has shown he still has the talent and goal-scoring ability at Gallants, questions are being asked whether Kaizer Chiefs missed a trick by pulling out of the deal.. Given the team’s ongoing struggles in attack, his experience and skill could have been just what they needed to boost their firepower.
Mhango’s journey serves as a reminder of how unpredictable football transfers can be. .Despite the setbacks, he has maintained resilience and determination, proving that he’s still a player to watch in South African football.
