Authorities are actively searching for four lions that made a daring escape from Kruger National Park over the weekend.
The lions were reported to have escaped on Sunday, and sightings have been reported in the surrounding areas of Bushbuckridge and Hazyview.
Efforts to Track Down the Lions Continue
Despite the Easter Weekend, the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) has not slowed down its efforts to locate the lions.
Simphiwe Shungube, a spokesperson for the MTPA, assured the public that search teams are utilizing all available resources.
“We’re using dogs today, and we remain confident that we will find the lions if they are still outside the park,” Shungube said in an interview with The Citizen.
Community Urged to Stay Safe and Report Sightings
Shungube emphasized the importance of public safety, urging residents to avoid any confrontations with the lions.
Instead, he encouraged anyone who spots the animals to immediately report their location to the authorities.
In an interview with eNCA, Shungube explained that authorities are using drones, dogs, and traditional tracking methods to find the escaped lions.
A Call to the Community for Caution
Shungube also stressed that, while the lions have been spotted near the park, the community must not attempt to capture the animals on their own.
“We are determined to recover these lions,” he stated, reassuring the public that the MTPA is working tirelessly to ensure the animals are safely located.
