Mousa Dembele, a former Tottenham Hotspur player, has declared that he would retire from sport later this year.
The 34-year-old Belgian’s contract expires in a year, and Dembele has stated that he has no plans to extend it.
He issued the following statement on Instagram: “Hello everyone, first and foremost, I’d want to express my gratitude for all of the kind words I’ve received.
“To be clear, I have not yet come to a halt. My contract is still valid for another year. But I can already tell you that I’m going to cease after this year.
Thank you.” According to Belgian outlet, HLN, Dembele rejected the offer of a new deal from Chinese Super League club Guangzhou.
Dembele joined Guangzhou in 2019 following seven years at Tottenham.
He first played in the Premier League for Fulham but his best years came under Mauricio Pochettino in North London.
The Belgian midfielder became a fan favourite at Spurs and many have paid tribute to Dembele following news of his retirement.
Dembele made 249 appearances for Spurs, scoring 10 goals for the club in all competitions.
He also won 82 caps for Belgium with his last appearance coming in 2019
