Football can be unpredictable, and Nick Powell knows that better than most.
Just hours after leaving Stockport County by mutual consent, the 31-year-old midfielder has already found a new home with Bradford City.
The quick turnaround has surprised many fans, but for Powell, it’s another chapter in a career filled with twists and turns.
From Wonderkid to United Signing
Powell’s story began with plenty of promise. Back in 2012, he was just 18 when Sir Alex Ferguson signed him for Manchester United in a £6 million deal, calling him “an exceptional talent.”
His move came right after scoring a spectacular goal for Crewe Alexandra in the League Two play-off final—a moment that made him one of English football’s most talked-about prospects.
But his big break at Old Trafford never quite materialised.
In Ferguson’s final season, Powell made six appearances and even scored once, but once the legendary manager retired, opportunities dried up.
Successive bosses David Moyes and Louis van Gaal sent him out on loan to Wigan, Leicester, and Hull, before eventually letting him go in 2016 after just nine United appearances.
Rebuilding Away from the Spotlight
Though United didn’t work out, Powell managed to rebuild his career.
He found his rhythm at Wigan Athletic, scoring 41 goals across 140 games and becoming a key player.
A move to Stoke City followed, where he played over 100 matches and earned a reputation as a hardworking and creative midfielder.
In 2023, he joined Stockport County, enjoying a strong first season.
However, the following campaign saw him sidelined more often, with fewer starts and more time spent on the bench.
By August 2025, both club and player agreed it was time to part ways.
Bradford Move Confirmed
Stockport announced his departure on Monday, but Powell didn’t stay without a club for long.
By the evening, League One side Bradford City revealed he had signed for them, becoming their 10th summer signing.
Speaking about the move, Powell said he was eager to get started:
“I am really pleased to be here. I spoke to Graham Alexander, he sold the club to me and I am raring to go.
The crowd here is a massive draw, having such large attendances in League One is a massive pull for anyone.”
Manager’s Backing and New Ambition
Bradford boss Graham Alexander, who guided the team to promotion last season, expressed excitement about bringing Powell on board.
“Nick’s ability is undoubted and he is determined to rediscover the form he has shown many times previously.
It is a deal that suits both parties and we are looking forward to helping him enjoy his football and show his quality once more.”
With two wins and a draw from their first three matches, Bradford have already made a strong start in League One.
Powell’s arrival adds depth and experience to their midfield as they push for another successful season.
