Former England cricketer Matthew Hoggard reveals how Azeem Rafiq racism scandal devastated his family and business in England

Former England cricketer Matthew Hoggard has spoken out about the lasting effects of the Azeem Rafiq racism scandal, revealing how it deeply affected both his personal life and business.

The 2005 Ashes winner shared that the controversy not only disrupted his career but also left him and his family struggling for over a year.

The scandal first surfaced in August 2020 when ex-Yorkshire player Azeem Rafiq alleged historical racism within the club.

Following an investigation, the Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) found five former players guilty of bringing the game into disrepute due to the use of racist or discriminatory language.

The Consequences for Hoggard and Others

Among those sanctioned in 2023 were Hoggard, Tim Bresnan, Andrew Gale, John Blain, and Richard Pyrah, all of whom denied the allegations but chose to withdraw from the disciplinary process.

Meanwhile, former England captain Michael Vaughan was cleared, while Gary Ballance admitted his role in the matter.

Yorkshire County Cricket Club also accepted the charges against the organization.

Hoggard, who was fined £4,000 and banned from cricket, expressed frustration over how the case was handled.

Speaking to The Telegraph, he described the disciplinary proceedings as a “kangaroo court” and criticized the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for what he called “absolutely disgusting” treatment.

A Struggle for Redemption

While acknowledging that some of the behavior in the Yorkshire dressing room was inappropriate, Hoggard remained firm that it was neither bullying nor racism.

He reflected on changing social attitudes, pointing out how past comedy shows like Little Britain, Harry Enfield and Chums, and Ali G would not be acceptable in today’s climate.

“I grew up in the ’80s and ’90s, and things were said back then that make you cringe now,” he admitted.

“The world has changed, and rightly so, but it feels like everything has become too woke.”

Since retiring from cricket in 2013, Hoggard has pursued a new passion, launching Hoggy’s Grill, a barbecue cooking school.

However, he revealed that the racism allegations significantly damaged his business.

The Impact on His Mental Health and Career

The fallout from the case led to financial and emotional distress, with major brand deals for Hoggy’s Grill falling through.

“It ruined me and my family for a year, maybe longer,” he said.

“We had so many opportunities lined up, but as soon as the allegations became public, companies started pulling out. I was completely cancelled.”

Hoggard also admitted to struggling with severe anxiety, avoiding social situations for fear of being labeled a racist.

“I didn’t want to leave the house. I couldn’t be in a room with more than two people because I felt like everyone was judging me,” he shared.

“Over time, I started to come out of my shell again.

People told me privately that they didn’t believe the allegations, but no one wanted to say it publicly because of how sensitive the topic was.”

Hoggard’s Apology to Rafiq

Despite his frustrations with the process, Hoggard did acknowledge the impact his words had on Rafiq and reached out personally to apologize.

Rafiq later recalled receiving a phone call from Hoggard after a televised interview, in which Hoggard expressed regret for his past comments.

“He said, ‘I didn’t realize. I’m really sorry for the way some of my comments made you feel,’” Rafiq shared.

“All I ever wanted was an apology.”

What’s Next for Hoggard?

Though the scandal left lasting scars, Hoggard is gradually rebuilding his life and business.

While he remains critical of how the ECB handled the case, he is focused on moving forward.

Whether the cricket world will welcome him back in any capacity remains uncertain, but for now, his priority is reclaiming a sense of normalcy after a turbulent chapter in his life.
