Today, a significant development occurred in the District of Columbia as a federal grand jury handed down an indictment against a former D.C. Special Police Officer. Curtis Holloway, aged 65, now stands accused of violating an arrestee’s civil rights while acting under the color of law.

Charges Against Curtis Holloway

The indictment brings forward a serious accusation: Holloway is charged with depriving rights under color of law. The specific allegation is that he used excessive and unjustifiable force against an individual identified as A.J. According to the indictment, Holloway struck A.J. on the head with a firearm, causing injury.

In addition to the civil rights violation, Holloway faces charges of obstructing justice.

This stems from false statements he allegedly made to the Metropolitan Police Department officers who were responding to the incident.

Moreover, he is also charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

Potential Penalties

The civil rights and assault charges each carry a maximum prison sentence of 10 years.

However, the obstruction of justice charge could result in up to 20 years behind bars.

If Holloway is found guilty, the sentencing will be determined by a federal judge, who will consider the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other relevant statutory factors.

Official Statements and Investigation

The announcement was made by Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves for the District of Columbia, and Acting Special Agent in Charge David Geist of the FBI Washington Field Office.

The FBI Washington Field Office led the investigation into this case.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Joshua Gold and Trial Attorney Laura-Kate Bernstein from the Civil Rights Division’s Criminal Section are handling the prosecution.

Presumption of Innocence

It is important to note that an indictment is simply a formal accusation.

Curtis Holloway is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
