Abuja residents were left anxious over the weekend after a fire broke out at Leventis Plaza, a bustling commercial complex in the city.

The blaze targeted a tailoring workshop on the first floor but, thanks to a rapid response by the Federal Fire Service (FFS), it was contained before spreading further.

Suspected Electrical Surge Sparks Fire

According to the FFS, the fire is believed to have started due to an electrical surge.

Paul Abraham, the service’s spokesperson, confirmed that firefighters acted promptly, preventing the flames from reaching neighboring buildings such as Grand Square, The Palm Hotels, and Frazier’s Suites.

Firefighters Arrive Within Minutes

The FFS statement highlighted the efficiency of the emergency response.

“Upon receiving the alert, the Special Unit from the National Headquarters, led by SF Adoko, was dispatched and arrived within five minutes,” Abraham said.

The team quickly tackled the fire, ensuring it did not escalate into a larger disaster.

Significant Property Saved

Thanks to their swift action, property worth roughly ₦900 million was salvaged out of an estimated ₦1 billion at risk.

Firefighters conducted not just firefighting, but also salvage operations, thorough inspections, and overhaul procedures to secure the area fully.

Safety Reminders for the Public

The Federal Fire Service used the incident to remind citizens about fire safety, particularly regarding electrical installations.

Abraham emphasized that careful maintenance and vigilance could prevent similar incidents in commercial buildings.

Growing Concern Over Commercial Fires

PUNCH Online reports that fires in Abuja’s commercial buildings have become a recurring concern, often linked to electrical faults and inadequate maintenance.

The recent incident at Leventis Plaza underscores the need for stricter safety measures to protect both property and lives.
