What was supposed to be a peaceful weekend getaway at Cape Vidal nature reserve in iSimangaliso Wetland Park quickly turned into a terrifying ordeal for one family last Saturday.
While camping in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal’s wilderness, a young man was attacked by two hyenas, raising serious questions about safety at wild campsites.
Son Attacked After Returning to Tent
Nicolas Hohls, 27, had been enjoying a social gathering with his family at the reserve when the incident occurred.
After returning to their tents late in the evening, the unexpected attack began.
“He suffered injuries to his left leg and face,” said Colin Hohls, Nicolas’ father, who sprang into action as soon as he heard the commotion.
“The hyenas only backed off when I intervened.”
Urgent Trip to Hospital
Given the remote location of the reserve, Colin Hohls couldn’t wait for paramedics to arrive.
“I bundled him into my double-cab and drove straight to Netcare The Bay hospital,” he recalled.
“Thankfully, his skull wasn’t fractured, but he did undergo plastic surgery on his face, leg, and ankle. He’s recovering well now.”
Authorities Remind Campers to Stay Vigilant
Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, which manages the reserve, confirmed awareness of the attack.
In a statement, the organization urged campers to properly secure tents and food items overnight.
They emphasized that Cape Vidal is a wild environment, and encounters with animals moving through campsites are possible.
Lessons From a Harrowing Experience
This frightening event serves as a stark reminder of the risks involved in camping in open, wild spaces.
Campers are encouraged to stay alert, follow safety guidelines, and ensure their tents and food are properly stored to prevent wildlife encounters.
