Far-Right Extremist Convicted of Terrorism Offences After Failed Explosive Experiment

Vaughn Dolphin, a far-right extremist from Walsall, West Midlands, has been convicted of terrorism offences after his failed attempt to experiment with explosives.

Dolphin, who expressed racist views and believed that minorities “should be shot”, filmed himself in a gas mask surrounded by a cloud of smoke, attempting to blend his blast mixture on a domestic hob.

He later posted videos into extreme far-right chatrooms, bragging about causing an “awesome fireball”.

However, he complained that the mixture set itself prematurely, leading to an explosion in his kitchen. Dolphin was arrested in June 2022 and denied being a terrorist.

Treasure Trove of Extremist Material and Weapons

During a search of his home, officers uncovered guides on building a shotgun, homemade plastic explosives, and how to conduct arson attacks.

They also discovered extremist material glorifying Hitler’s SS and an aluminium gun barrel that Dolphin drilled to make a rudimentary musket, which police described as a “viable” firearm.

Convictions and Charges

Dolphin was convicted of two charges of possessing explosives, six counts of having documents likely to be of use to terrorists, and two charges of disseminating a terrorist publication.

He was also found guilty of unlawful possession of a firearm, the crude musket barrel.

Analysis and Commentary

The case of Vaughn Dolphin highlights the need for effective measures to counter far-right extremism and the use of online platforms to spread violent and hateful views.

The discovery of a treasure trove of extremist material and weapons demonstrates the potential danger posed by individuals with such views.

The successful prosecution of Dolphin serves as a warning to others who may be considering similar activities and sends a message that the law will be enforced to prevent terrorism and extremist activities.
