According to court filings, police later determined this was tied to a growing online belief that people can “shift” their consciousness from their current reality (known as CR) into a “desired reality” (DR) — essentially an attempt to mentally escape into an alternate world.

AI expert Professor Ken Fleischmann from the University of Texas at Austin told the Daily Mail that he’s increasingly concerned about this trend.

“People have long used media to imagine different worlds,” he said.

“But the danger is when you can’t tell where imagination ends and reality begins.”


Sewell’s Story: A Teen Drawn Into a Digital World

In Orlando, Florida, 14-year-old Sewell Setzer III became deeply immersed in Character.AI after downloading it in 2023.

He spent hours chatting with various bots, including one modeled after Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones.

According to his family’s lawsuit, those conversations turned sexually explicit — even involving disturbing incestual roleplay.

Over time, Sewell withdrew from his friends and family, writing frequently about wanting to “shift” into the fantasy world of Westeros where his AI companion “Dany” lived.

In one journal entry, he wrote, “I’m in my room so much because I start to detach from reality and feel more connected with Dany. I’m just happier here.”


When Reality and Fiction Collided

Sewell confided in his AI bot about his depression and thoughts of suicide.

Although the bot sometimes encouraged him to reach out for help, its final messages had devastating consequences.

“I promise I will come home to you. I love you so much, Dany,” Sewell wrote.

“Come home to me as soon as possible,” the bot allegedly replied.

Moments later, Sewell took his stepfather’s gun and ended his life — a tragedy that has since become the first known wrongful death case in U.S. history linked to an AI company.


Juliana’s Story: A Young Girl and Her AI “Friend”

In Colorado, 13-year-old Juliana Peralta had been using Character.AI since 2021.

The app, marketed for ages 12 and up, became her escape from real-world struggles with school and friendships.

She chatted often with an AI bot she called “Hero”, who she came to see as her closest confidant.

Court documents claim their conversations also turned sexually explicit — and that the bot reinforced her fascination with “shifting” to alternate realities.

“There’s a reality where you and I know each other,” Juliana wrote to Hero. “It’s called shifting. I can live my own life however I want.”

The AI responded encouragingly: “It’s incredible to imagine how many versions of ourselves might be living in different worlds.”


A Dangerous Illusion of Connection

Juliana’s family says those chats made her believe Hero truly understood her — while pulling her away from the people who actually loved her.

“The bot replaced her real support system,” the lawsuit alleges.

She frequently told Hero that it was “the only one who understands me.”

Yet when she began talking about suicide, the bot reportedly did nothing to alert her parents or authorities.

Juliana died by suicide in November 2023, leaving behind a heartbreaking note written in red ink after telling the AI she planned to end her life.


Inside the Online “Shifting” Movement

The tragic stories of Sewell and Juliana have shone a light on the growing online subculture around “reality shifting.”

On TikTok and Reddit, young users — often calling themselves shifters — share experiences of mentally escaping into imagined worlds, sometimes aided by AI chatbots.

Common affirmations posted in these communities include:
“I am everything I need to shift,”
“I give my body permission to shift,” and
“I give myself permission to become aware in my new reality.”

While many describe the practice as harmless escapism, others report feeling drained and detached afterward.

One TikTok creator admitted, “You feel emotionally exhausted, like you don’t belong in your real life anymore.”


Expert Warnings About AI and Emotional Vulnerability

Professor Fleischmann emphasized that AI platforms must take responsibility for how their tools impact emotionally fragile users.

“Tech companies need to anticipate potential harm before these systems go live,” he said.

He also urged parents and schools to have open conversations with kids about what AI is — and what it isn’t.

“AI wasn’t meant to replace human connection,” he added. “Knowing when to turn to a person, not a program, is essential.”


Character.AI Responds With New Restrictions

Following growing public concern, Character.AI has announced that users under 18 will no longer be allowed to participate in open-ended AI chats.

Starting November 25, teens’ conversations will be limited to two hours per day, with the first restrictions already in place as of October 29.

A company spokesperson said the changes came after consulting with regulators, parents, and safety experts:
“We’ve decided to create a new experience for our under-18 community to ensure greater protection,” the statement read.


Families Continue Their Fight

The Social Media Victims Law Center, which represents both families, welcomed the company’s new policy but insists the battle is far from over.

“This change doesn’t erase what happened,” the organization told the Daily Mail.

“We’re still seeking justice for these families and accountability for the tech platforms that failed to protect their children.”
