Meghan Markle’s statement denying reports that she will not attend King Charles’s coronation because of a letter she wrote to him expressing concern over “unconscious bias” in the Royal Family has been criticized by royal expert Daniela Elser.
According to her, the statement doesn’t include an actual denial of the allegations made over the weekend, and thus raises questions about its intentions.
Elser believes that the omission of a clear rejection of the report confirms that there had been a series of letters exchanged between Montecito and The Palace in 2021.
In response to the report, journalist Omid Scobie, who is known to be close to the Sussexes, stated that the Duchess of Sussex was “not thinking about correspondence from two years ago related to conversations from four years ago”.
She also accused the “tabloid media and various royal correspondents” of creating an “exhausting circus”.
However, Elser pointed out that the language of the statement was carefully considered, and it seems strange that it did not include a clear rejection of the Telegraph story.
Elser’s observations on the statement highlight the ongoing controversy surrounding the Coronation, which threatens to overshadow the event.
Despite Prince Harry’s denial that the Royal Family is racist, reports of unconscious bias within the institution persist.
Scobie’s defense of Meghan and her statement suggests that the couple will continue to confront such issues head-on.
Ultimately, the coming days will reveal whether the Sussexes’ strategy of speaking out will be effective in confronting allegations of racism and unconscious bias in the Royal Family.
