Everyone’s favorite Superman is out of the DC universe and Dwayne Johnson react to the news

In 2022, Henry Cavill faced disappointment after leaving his successful Netflix show The Witcher to join the DC universe.

Despite making a post-credits appearance in Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, Cavill’s run as Superman was cut short, extinguishing hopes for what could have been a blockbuster movie franchise for the two stars.

Johnson recently addressed the situation on the Oscars red carpet, stating that he had done everything possible to create the best movie possible for Black Adam.

He likened the situation to a new owner of a pro football team who replaces the previous successful coach and quarterback with someone new.

Johnson had previously pitched CEO David Zaslav a multi-year plan for Black Adam and a Cavill-led Superman, with the two properties interweaving to set up a Superman-versus-Black Adam showdown.

However, plans for Black Adam were also put on hold with the arrival of a new era for DC Studios, ushered in by James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Gunn and Safran announced several projects for the DC universe’s reinvention, including Superman: Legacy, which is scheduled for release in 2025.

This project focuses on a younger Superman character who is balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.

There is also a Green Lantern television series called Lanterns and an HBO drama about Themyscira, Wonder Woman’s birthplace, reminiscent of Game of Thrones.

Although many of the current DC projects are set for 2025 and beyond, Johnson and Gunn’s open-ended statements suggest that we may still see more from Black Adam and Superman.

Even if DC plans to focus on a younger Superman character, there may still be room for Cavill in the DC universe.

However, it is also possible that Cavill and Johnson could play superheroes outside of Marvel or DC, as there are many other studios capable of bringing superheroes to life.
