eThekwini Municipality Updates on Which Durban Beaches and Pools Are Open for Swimming and Which Are Closed Due to Poor Water Quality

The eThekwini Municipality has provided an updated list of which Durban beaches and public pools are safe for swimming.

As of March 13, they have identified some beaches with water quality issues, while others remain open for a fun, safe swim.

Beaches Closed for Swimming

Currently, five beaches in Durban are closed to swimmers due to poor water quality.

These are:

  • Country Club

  • Thekwini Beach

  • Laguna Beach

  • Reunion Beach

  • Doonside Beach

While swimming is prohibited at these locations, the municipality notes that you can still enjoy other recreational activities on these beaches, such as relaxing on the sand or taking a walk.

Open Beaches for Swimming

For those looking to enjoy the waves, 18 beaches in Durban are open and safe for swimming.

These beaches are available for swimmers daily from 6:00 AM to 6:30 PM. The open beaches include:

  • Point Beach

  • Mdlotli Main

  • Bronze Beach

  • Umhlanga Main

  • Umgababa

  • Winkelspruit

  • Toti Main Beach

  • Pipeline Beach

  • Westbrook

  • Ushaka

  • Addington

  • Brighton

  • North Beach

  • Bay of Plenty

  • South Beach

  • Battery Beach

  • Anstey’s Beach

  • Wedge Beach

These beaches offer a variety of spots for locals and tourists to enjoy swimming, sunbathing, or simply taking in the coastal views.

Public Swimming Pools Open in Durban

In addition to the beach updates, the municipality has also confirmed that 40 public swimming pools are open across Durban.

These pools are available for public use, offering a great option for those looking to swim in a controlled environment.

Public swimming pools are open Monday to Saturday from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and on Sundays and public holidays from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Public Opinion on Water Quality

With some beaches still closed due to poor water quality, particularly concerning E.coli levels, many are questioning whether more should be done to address these issues.

The municipality has been working on monitoring water safety, but residents and visitors may still have concerns.
