Eskom Urges South Africans to Register Their Solar Systems to Avoid Legal Issues Ahead of 2026 Deadline

Eskom Urges South Africans to Register Their Solar Systems to Avoid Legal Issues Ahead of 2026 Deadline

Eskom has issued an important reminder for solar system owners across South Africa: all unregistered grid-tied solar systems are now considered illegal.

As a result, if you have installed a solar system connected to the grid, you must ensure it’s registered before March 2026.

If you haven’t done so yet, here’s what you need to know.

How to Register Your Solar System with Eskom

To make sure your solar system is compliant with Eskom’s regulations, you’ll need to complete the process of applying for a Small-Scale Embedded Generator (SSEG) connection.

This is how you can get started:

  1. Download the Application Form: Visit Eskom’s website to download the necessary form for registering your SSEG system.
  2. Submit Your Application: Once the form is completed, email it to Eskom at customerservices@eskom.co.za. If you’re unsure about any part of the process, you can always call 086 003 7566 to speak with a local advisor who can guide you through the submission.

Documents You’ll Need to Submit

To ensure your application is processed smoothly, make sure you have the following supporting documents ready:

  • A recent electricity bill.
  • A letter of authorization if someone else is applying on your behalf.
  • A Single Line Diagram (SLD) of your system.
  • The completed Eskom SSEG application form.
  • A valid ID of the applicant.

Once your application is submitted, you’ll need to also register with NERSA (National Electricity Regulator of South Africa).

NERSA will issue a registration letter or license, which can be accessed through their website at NERSA.

After receiving this document, you must send it to Eskom, who will then provide a quote for any fees related to connecting your solar system to the grid.

Completion Steps for Your Solar System

Once everything is in place, here are the next steps:

  • Sign the Agreement: After receiving a quote from Eskom, you’ll need to sign the new supply agreement and pay any applicable fees.
  • Installation: You will install the generator portion of the system, while Eskom will handle the part that connects your system to the grid.
  • Quality Assessment: Eskom will assess the quality of the installation and ensure everything meets the required standards.
  • Final Report: After installation, you will need to provide Eskom with the signed Embedded Generation Installation report.
  • Create a Customer Account: Finally, you will create a new customer account with Eskom to manage your solar system connection.

If you face any difficulties during the process, don’t hesitate to call Eskom’s support line at 086 003 7566 or email them.

Remember to include the relevant province code in your email address and mark the subject as #SSEG Application.

Load-Shedding Suspended After Eskom’s Announcement

In a separate update, Eskom also announced a sudden suspension of load-shedding after a period of uncertainty.

On January 31, 2025, Eskom shocked South Africans by reintroducing load-shedding after an almost 10-month break.

However, just two days ago, they confirmed that load-shedding was suspended, thanks to the recovery of sufficient emergency reserves.

This relief came after the successful repair and return to service of five coal-fired generation units, which have added 2,930MW to the grid.

Have You Registered Your Solar System Yet?

If you haven’t already registered your solar system with Eskom, it’s time to act before the March 2026 deadline.
