Ed Sheeran is taking a major step in both his personal and professional life—he’s moving to America.
The singer, 34, shared on the 2 Johnnies podcast that he’ll be relocating with his family while on tour, describing it as more than just a temporary stop.
“I’m just about to move to America,” he said.
“I feel like I might be the only person moving to America.
I’m going on tour there for a while, and I have a family, so I can’t dip in and out. We’re going and settling there.”
Although Ed hasn’t revealed exactly where he’ll be living, fans speculate the move could align with his ambitions in country music.
From Suffolk to New York
Despite his global fame, Ed has strong ties to the UK.
He splits his time between his luxurious Sheeranville estate in Suffolk, where he lives with wife Cherry Seaborn and their daughters Lyra, five, and Jupiter, three, and his impressive property portfolio, which includes a newly purchased £9 million home in New York.
For now, it seems he’s ready to embrace life in the States more permanently, balancing his family life with an exciting tour schedule.
Nashville Dreams and Country Music
Ed has previously hinted that a move to the U.S. could help him dive into country music.
Earlier this year, he said, “When you transition to country, you can’t transition back.
Nashville is my favourite city in the States and it’s always been my end goal to move there and transition to country.”
It’s clear that his relocation isn’t just about touring—it’s part of a bigger plan to explore new musical horizons.
Embracing Irish Roots
Ed’s move comes just a couple of months after he stirred controversy by describing himself as culturally Irish, despite being born and raised in England.
On The Louis Theroux Podcast, he explained that his upbringing was heavily influenced by his father, John, who hails from Belfast.
“I class my culture as Irish,” Ed said. “My dad’s family is … he’s got seven brothers and sisters.
We’d spend all our holidays in Ireland. My first musical experiences were in Ireland; I grew up with trad music in the house.
So I identify culturally as Irish, but I was obviously born and raised in Britain.”
He added that he’s proud of his Irish heritage and doesn’t feel limited to identifying as British just because of his birthplace.
Fans Split on Ed’s Irish Identity
Not everyone agreed with Ed’s perspective. Social media erupted with mixed reactions, from playful jabs to more critical comments.
Some questioned whether he was “pretending,” while others defended his cultural identity, noting his Irish family roots and musical connections to the country.
One fan wrote, “He has roots. Nothing wrong with identifying with your heritage,” while another joked, “Does Ed Sheeran hold eligibility to start for the Irish national football team?”
Ireland: A Second Home
Despite the backlash, Ed emphasized the special place Ireland holds in his life.
He described it as “basically my second home, musically” and acknowledged the country’s role in shaping his early musical experiences.
For Ed, cultural identity isn’t just about where you’re born—it’s about heritage, upbringing, and personal connection.
