As the European Championship kicks off, England captain Leah Williamson is looking ahead with excitement and determination.
The Lionesses are not just defending their title—they’re stepping into fresh territory, eager to prove themselves on foreign soil and take on new challenges.
Looking Beyond Defense to New Opportunities
When asked about the pressure of defending their crown, Williamson was clear: this tournament isn’t just about holding onto past glory.
Instead, the team sees it as a fresh chance to grow and achieve something different.
She explained, “It’s new territory. We’re not just defending a title; we’re embracing a new challenge and an opportunity to do something new.”
Her focus, and that of the entire squad, remains on taking things one day at a time. “That’s always the dream,” she added.
Fresh Faces Bring New Energy
This year’s squad includes seven players making their debut at a major tournament, including exciting talents like Grace Clinton, Jess Park, and Michelle Agyemang, a wildcard pick.
Williamson talked about how the experienced players are supporting these newcomers, helping them find their feet in the high-pressure environment.
“The game has evolved so much since some of us played our first tournaments,” she said.
“We want to give the new players freedom to enjoy the experience but also make their mark on the pitch.”
Balancing Excitement with Focus
Williamson knows that big tournaments come with distractions and excitement, and she wants the new players to soak in the moment without letting nerves take over.
“I wouldn’t want anyone to feel so anxious it consumes them,” she said.
“There are lots of shiny things at a tournament, but the main focus has to be football.
Based on training, and I’m sure Sarina agrees, everyone’s focus is football first, which is fantastic.”
She added with a smile, “When I went to my first tournament, I had to be kept in line a bit because it’s easy to get distracted.
But there’s no fear of that with this group.”
France’s Captain Sidelined Ahead of Opener
Looking ahead to their first match on Saturday night against France, there’s some news from the opposition.
France’s captain and center-back Griedge Mbock will miss the game due to a calf injury, potentially giving England an edge.
The match kicks off at 8pm and will be broadcast live on ITV, setting the stage for an eagerly awaited start to the tournament.
