England cricket fans are saying goodbye to one of their most reliable all-rounders as Chris Woakes announces his immediate retirement from international cricket.

The 36-year-old leaves the international stage after a distinguished 15-year career, stepping away just short of a remarkable milestone of 200 Test wickets.

Injury Forces Woakes Out of Winter Ashes

Woakes missed England’s recent winter Ashes tour following a shoulder dislocation sustained during the fifth Test against India over the summer.

The injury, caused while breaking a fall with his left hand, sidelined him from further international action, prompting the decision to retire.

Despite the disappointment of leaving just eight wickets shy of the 200 mark, Woakes will continue to play in domestic cricket.

Reflecting on a Dream Career

Speaking about his decision, Woakes said, “The moment has come, and I’ve decided it’s the right time to retire from international cricket.

Playing for England has been a dream since I was a kid in the back garden.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have lived that dream.”

He fondly recalled his debut in Australia in 2011 and the incredible experiences that followed.

Lifting two World Cups and being part of some amazing Ashes series are memories I’ll treasure forever,” he added.

Gratitude to Family, Teammates, and Fans

Woakes paid heartfelt tribute to his family, saying, “To my wife Amie and our girls, Laila and Evie, thank you for your unwavering love, support, and sacrifices.

None of this would have been possible without you.”

He also thanked the fans, particularly the famous “Barmy Army,” as well as coaches and teammates at England and Warwickshire for their guidance and friendship.

Career Highlights and Achievements

Woakes made his ODI and T20 debuts in 2011 and his Test debut in 2013.

He was part of England’s 2019 Cricket World Cup-winning squad and helped secure the T20 World Cup in 2022.

Notable performances include his three wickets at Lord’s to defeat New Zealand in 2019 and his key contributions against Pakistan in Melbourne in 2022.

Over his career, Woakes represented England 217 times, showcasing both skill and consistency.

ECB Praises Woakes’ Dedication

England and Wales Cricket Board Chair Richard Thompson expressed admiration for Woakes’ commitment: “The images of Chris walking out to bat with his arm in a sling this summer reflect how much he cared about playing for his country.

He has been a true gentleman off the field and a fierce competitor on it.”

Thompson highlighted Woakes’ memorable moments, from World Cup brilliance to his Player of the Series performance in the 2023 Men’s Ashes, emphasizing the lasting legacy he leaves behind.

A Lasting Legacy for England Cricket

As Chris Woakes steps away from the international arena, his combination of resilience, skill, and sportsmanship ensures he will be remembered as one of England’s most dependable all-rounders.

While the international chapter closes, fans can still enjoy his contributions on the domestic circuit for years to come.
