For Mason Greenwood, the question of where his international career lies remains unanswered.
The 23-year-old forward, now playing in France with Marseille, continues to find himself in the middle of speculation about whether he will represent England again or commit fully to Jamaica.
Jamaica Were Ready, Greenwood Was Not
Jamaica’s head coach, Steve McClaren, had been preparing to welcome Greenwood into the squad for two upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
The Caribbean nation even went as far as securing him a passport, expecting his debut in the green and gold.
But those plans have been put on hold. Greenwood told the Jamaican federation he needs more time to decide where his international future lies, choosing instead to focus on his strong start to life in Ligue 1.
Life at Marseille Comes First
Greenwood has looked sharp for Marseille this season, scoring once and providing two assists in just three league games.
This follows a hugely successful campaign last year, where he found the net 21 times.
His form suggests his focus right now is purely on club football.
England Keeping Their Distance
Meanwhile, there has been no movement from the England setup.
Head coach Thomas Tuchel confirmed he hasn’t reached out to Greenwood, nor has the Football Association made any plans to reintegrate him.
“I have not spoken to him,” Tuchel admitted. “My understanding was that he was trying to play for Jamaica, so we didn’t give it another thought.
He is not in the mix right now and not in our thoughts for the team. He’s no priority at the moment.”
The Complicated England Past
Greenwood has only one England cap to his name.
That came back in September 2020, when he came on as a substitute against Iceland.
His time with the squad ended abruptly, however, after he breached Covid-19 quarantine rules during that international break.
Under FIFA regulations, Greenwood is still eligible to switch national teams since he played fewer than three matches for England before turning 21.
Jamaica Still Hopeful
Despite Greenwood delaying his decision, McClaren is not ready to give up.
The Jamaica boss admitted he was disappointed but made it clear the door remains open.
“It’s a little bit disappointing, we probably have to be more patient,” McClaren said.
“We will keep pursuing him because I know from my conversations with Mason that he loves Jamaica.”
What’s Next for Greenwood?
For now, Greenwood seems focused on Marseille, where his performances are doing plenty of talking.
But the bigger question remains: will he one day wear the Three Lions again, or will he commit his international career to Jamaica? Whichever way he goes, the decision could shape the rest of his footballing journey.
