Elon Musk, often touted as the world’s richest self-made businessman, has come under scrutiny by many in both South Africa and the U.S. Critics are raising concerns about his claims of growing up in a modest, “lower-middle-income” family, pointing out the advantages his privileged background might have afforded him.
Elon Musk’s Claim of a Modest Upbringing
In a tweet from 2023, Musk revealed that his father, Errol Musk, an engineer and property developer, played a significant role in teaching him important concepts in physics, engineering, and construction.
However, he went on to stress that he did not receive any significant financial help from his family, painting a picture of a self-made man.
Musk tweeted: “I grew up in a lower, transitioning to upper, middle-income situation, but did not have a happy childhood.
Haven’t inherited anything ever from anyone, nor has anyone given me a large financial gift.”
Musk’s journey began when he left South Africa at 17, moving to Canada with nothing but a backpack and a suitcase full of books.
He later moved to the U.S., where he went on to create groundbreaking companies like Tesla, SpaceX, and PayPal.
In 2022, Musk bought Twitter, renaming it X, for a staggering $44 billion.
Errol Musk Sets the Record Straight
However, Errol Musk, Elon’s father, has spoken out to counter some of his son’s claims.
In an interview on the Podcast & Chill show with MacG, Errol revealed that Elon and his siblings, Kimbal and Tosca, were raised in a very comfortable and affluent environment, which contradicts Elon’s claims of a “lower-middle-income” childhood.
Errol recalled that his children had access to private jets, luxury vehicles, and cash stored in their father’s safe.
The family lived in large mansions in Sandton, Pretoria, and Durban, with Errol enjoying a successful career as a property developer and accumulating various assets like cars and even a private jet.
Family Disputes and the Emerald Mine Controversy
During the interview, Errol also addressed the controversy surrounding Elon’s claims about the family’s ties to Zambian emerald mines.
According to Errol, Elon’s distancing from the emerald business was more about his personal grievances rather than the truth.
He revealed that Elon had accompanied him to the mine and was well aware of the emerald dealings.
Errol explained, “Elon knows all about the emeralds.
It’s just because he wants to tell the people in America that he had a hard time.”
Was Elon Musk Truly Born into Wealth?
The debate over Musk’s privileged upbringing continues to spark discussion.
While Musk insists that he built his wealth independently, his father’s revelations paint a different picture, suggesting that the billionaire’s rise to success may have been helped by a considerable amount of family wealth and influence.
