It turns out that even the fiercest rivals sometimes look for common ground — at least when billions of dollars are on the line.
Court documents have revealed that Elon Musk once tried to recruit Mark Zuckerberg to join him in a staggering £72 billion takeover bid for OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.
A Rivalry That Goes Back Years
The revelation is especially striking because Musk and Zuckerberg are far from friendly.
Their feud stretches back to 2016, when a SpaceX rocket explosion destroyed a Facebook satellite — an incident that soured relations between the two tech titans.
Since then, they’ve publicly taken shots at each other, with the rivalry even escalating to joking talk of a cage fight.
Musk Reaches Out, Zuckerberg Stays Silent
According to court filings, Musk, 54, reached out to Zuckerberg earlier this year with a proposal to join forces on an OpenAI takeover.
The Meta boss, however, never responded.
OpenAI has since raised eyebrows about the idea, saying it was concerned about the “motivations” behind any attempt by two direct competitors to acquire the company.
Legal Battles Already Underway
This latest twist comes as Musk and OpenAI are already locked in a bitter courtroom fight.
Musk sued the company last year, claiming it had strayed from its original mission by switching to a for-profit model.
OpenAI hit back with a countersuit in April, and a jury trial has been scheduled for early next year.
Tech Titans, Ego Clashes, and Billions at Stake
The Musk-Zuckerberg rivalry has always been about more than just business — it’s about influence, vision, and control of the future of technology.
With both men leading companies at the cutting edge of artificial intelligence, space, and social media, the idea of them joining forces was always unlikely.
But in the high-stakes world of AI, where fortunes and power can shift overnight, even the unlikeliest partnerships can at least be floated.
