After years of legal battles, businessman Edwin Sodi can finally breathe a sigh of relief.
The Randburg Magistrate’s Court officially struck his attempted murder and assault case off the roll on Thursday, March 20, bringing an end to a highly publicized legal saga that began in 2022.
The case, which stemmed from allegations made by his wife, Nthateng Lerata, and her male companion, Faizal Motlekar, had dragged on for over three years, with Sodi making more than 20 court appearances.
However, after recent developments, the charges have been withdrawn.
What Led to the Case?
Back in 2022, Lerata accused Sodi of assaulting her and Motlekar at their home in Bryanston.
Reports claimed that during the altercation, Sodi allegedly attempted to shoot Lerata, but his gun jammed.
Additionally, it was said that he used the same weapon to strike Motlekar on the head.
These allegations led to attempted murder and assault charges being filed against Sodi, sparking widespread media attention and public debate.
Why Was the Case Withdrawn?
Despite the severity of the accusations, the case was eventually withdrawn following an out-of-court settlement between Sodi and Lerata. However, this resolution did not come easily.
Initially, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) refused to accept Lerata’s withdrawal statement, citing the serious issue of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in South Africa.
But as time went on, both complainants became uncooperative with the legal process.
NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane explained the court’s decision, stating:
“Both complainants were absent in court, and one had officially filed a withdrawal statement.
The second complainant also indicated that he no longer wished to proceed.
Given these circumstances, the defense argued for the case to be struck off the roll, and the court agreed.”
Edwin Sodi Reacts to the Verdict
Standing outside the courthouse, Sodi appeared visibly relieved. Speaking to the media, he said:
“So it’s over. We can now focus on other things. It’s a relief, and I’m glad it’s over.”
The businessman also revealed that he had endured over 22 court appearances during the past three years.
Expressing his frustration, he dismissed the accusations as “nonsense allegations” and said the ruling meant “minus one problem” for him moving forward.
More Legal Battles on the Horizon
Although this case is behind him, Sodi isn’t entirely free from legal troubles.
His company, Blackhead Consulting, remains entangled in two massive corruption cases related to controversial government tenders:
-
The R255 million asbestos contract in the Free State
-
The R295 million Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Works project
The Bloemfontein High Court has already postponed the asbestos contract case to April 15, 2025.
Meanwhile, the NPA has stated that Sodi’s properties—worth over R300 million—will be forfeited to the state if he is found guilty.
What’s Next for Edwin Sodi?
With one legal battle behind him, Sodi must now prepare for the ongoing court cases surrounding his company’s dealings.
While the businessman is relieved for now, the road ahead remains uncertain.
