Get ready, cycling fans—one of the biggest sporting events in the world is making its way back to the UK! In 2027, the Tour de France will kick off in Edinburgh, marking the third time the iconic race has started on British soil.
This isn’t just any cycling event; it’s the Grand Départ, the grand opening of the world’s most prestigious bike race.
The last two times the Tour began in the UK—London in 2007 and Yorkshire in 2014—millions lined the streets to cheer on the riders.
Now, Scotland’s capital will set the stage for an unforgettable start to the race, with two more UK stages to follow.
Tour de France Femmes Joins the Celebration
In a historic move, the UK will also host the start of the Tour de France Femmes—the women’s edition of the race—later that summer.
This will be the first time both the men’s and women’s races have launched from the same country outside France.
Yorkshire is expected to host the opening stage for the women’s competition, adding to Britain’s growing legacy in cycling.
Where Else Will the Tour Go?
While exact details of the UK stages won’t be revealed until later this year, some big-name locations are already rumored.
Expect to see the men’s race pass through stunning spots like the Lake District, Manchester, and Cardiff, making for a thrilling spectacle for both fans and riders alike.
Cycling Legends Weigh In
British cycling legend Sir Mark Cavendish, who retired last year after setting the record for the most Tour de France stage wins, was in Edinburgh for the big announcement.
“I don’t think we can comprehend how massive this is going to be,” said Cavendish.
“It’s bigger than we can ever imagine—truly exciting.”
Paul Bush, chair of the UK bid for the race, echoed the excitement, saying: “You’ve got the World Cup and the Olympic Games, and not far behind that is the Tour de France.
This will be the largest free sporting event ever to come to the British Isles.”
A Spectacle for Everyone
Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme also emphasized the visual appeal of the UK stages, especially the stunning backdrop of Edinburgh and Scotland.
“What’s very important in the Tour de France is the helicopter shots,” he explained.
“Edinburgh and Scotland will provide a breathtaking setting for the race.”
Beyond the competition itself, Prudhomme highlighted how the Tour isn’t just for sports fans.
“The Tour de France is about geography, culture, and pride. It’s an event for everyone.”
A Boost for the Economy and Future Generations
Hosting the Tour de France in 2014 gave the UK a significant economic boost—estimated at around £130 million.
The 2027 event is expected to have a similar impact, bringing in visitors, stimulating local businesses, and inspiring the next generation of cyclists.
Lisa Nandy, the UK’s culture secretary, sees this as an opportunity to leave a lasting legacy.
“This will encourage growth, attract visitors, and inspire athletes and fans alike.
Hosting the Tour de France Femmes will be a groundbreaking moment for women’s sport, helping to break down barriers for female cyclists.”
British Cycling CEO Jon Dutton also hopes to involve Edinburgh-born cycling icon Sir Chris Hoy in the lead-up to the event, recognizing his contributions to the sport despite his ongoing battle with prostate cancer.
“This isn’t just about the race,” Dutton added. “It’s about inspiring people to discover the joy of cycling, promoting healthier lifestyles, and bringing communities together.”
Free-to-Air TV Coverage?
One major talking point is how fans will be able to watch the event.
Tour de France coverage in the UK recently moved from ITV to TNT Sports, but Prudhomme remains hopeful that the UK stages in 2027 will be available on free-to-air TV.
“I do hope and believe the UK stages will be broadcast live and free to air,” he said.
“There will be discussions, but we’re optimistic.”
An Event to Remember
With Edinburgh hosting the Grand Départ and the Tour de France Femmes making its UK debut, 2027 is shaping up to be a landmark year for British cycling.
Whether you’re a die-hard fan or a casual spectator, this is an event you won’t want to miss.
Mark your calendars—it’s going to be a ride to remember!
