Recent developments within the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have led to the selection of Sihle Lonzi, a well-known student leader, as the replacement for former public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane in Parliament.

This decision highlights a significant transition for the party, as reported by the Mail & Guardian.

Sihle Lonzi Takes the Helm

Mkhwebane officially announced her resignation from the EFF last week after being a member for just a year.

Her association with the Red Berets began following her impeachment in September 2023, making her the first leader of a Chapter 9 institution to be removed from office.

In her resignation letter, Mkhwebane expressed her desire to take a break and prioritize time with her family.

She shared her heartfelt gratitude to the EFF and its members, acknowledging the support she received during a difficult time.

A Fond Farewell

“You fighters extended a helping hand, becoming a refuge for me over the past 12 months,” Mkhwebane wrote.

“Your unwavering support has been a beacon of hope, and for that, I am deeply grateful. Now, it is time for me to focus on spending cherished moments with my family. Thank you for standing by me.”

Her resignation follows that of several prominent party members, including co-founder Floyd Shivambu, Mzwanele Manyi, provincial leaders, and most recently, Fana Mokoena.

What Lies Ahead?

As the EFF navigates these changes, attention will now shift to Sihle Lonzi and how he will approach his new role.

The coming months will be crucial for the EFF as it works to stabilize and strengthen its position in South African politics.
