Durban High Court Schedules Trial for Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla Over Her Alleged Role in 2021 South African Riots

The Durban High Court has announced that the trial for Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, the daughter of former South African president Jacob Zuma, will begin in November.

She faces serious charges related to her alleged role in inciting the violent riots in July 2021, which led to the deaths of over 350 people.

The Charges and Accusations

Zuma-Sambudla, who is 42 years old, has been accused of inciting terrorism and public violence through social media posts after her father was sentenced to prison in July 2021.

Jacob Zuma’s imprisonment stemmed from his refusal to testify in corruption proceedings against him, which sparked widespread unrest.

The protests, looting, and violence that erupted soon after Zuma’s incarceration were among the deadliest in South Africa’s history since the end of apartheid in 1994.

Zuma-Sambudla has denied the charges and claims the legal action against her is politically motivated.

Court Dates and Legal Process

The Durban High Court has scheduled the trial to begin on November 10, with a pre-trial assessment set for August 14.

Mthunzi Mhaga, a spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority, confirmed the dates to AFP.

Impact on Durban and South Africa

Durban, located in the province of KwaZulu-Natal and the stronghold of Jacob Zuma’s political support, was hit hardest by the riots.

The violence quickly spread to Johannesburg, forcing President Cyril Ramaphosa, who succeeded Zuma in 2018, to deploy the military to restore order.

He later described the unrest as an attempt to overthrow the government.

Zuma’s Sentence and Release

Jacob Zuma served only two months of a 15-month sentence before his release on health grounds, with President Ramaphosa commuting his sentence later on.

This has only added fuel to the controversy surrounding the events of 2021, which continue to stir political tensions across the country.
