Dstl and the Alan Turing Institute have jointly launched Defence Centre to research problems related to advancing artificial intelligence (AI) capability

As part of the recently disclosed Defense AI Strategy and the recently established Defense AI Center, the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) has announced the creation of the Defence Centre for AI Research (DCAR).

The Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s institute for AI and data science, is launching the Center concurrently.

The Centre, which is supported by the Ministry of Defence’s Chief Scientific Advisor, will concentrate on the underlying issues related to enabling advancements in AI capacity.

Examples include things like:

The use of AI in war gaming understanding the limitations of AI models handling numerous sensors low short learning

The capacity to train machines to learn without the requirement for enormous amounts of data

AI ethics focused on people

Results are frequently anticipated to be important for both the wider UK economy and the defence sector.

While situated in London, Turing will use its reach to interact with colleges all throughout the nation, bringing the brightest talent in the UK together.

Starting in September 2022, the Center’s establishment is anticipated to result in the creation of at least 5 to 8 new academic positions, with room for expansion.

The UK’s MOD will be the most effective, efficient, dependable, and influential defense organization for its size in the world in terms of AI, according to the ambition outlined in the Defense AI Strategy, which was published in June 2022.
