It wasn’t your typical political summit—it had golf, jokes, and some eyebrow-raising compliments.
President Donald Trump met with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday at Trump’s own golf resort in Turnberry, Scotland, and the meeting quickly shifted from policy to personal as Trump lavished praise on Starmer’s wife, Victoria.
A Gushy Welcome on the Green
Standing outside the Trump Turnberry clubhouse, Trump made it clear he was in good spirits and ready to put on a show.
“I want to make the prime minister happy,” he told reporters with a smile.
But then, his attention quickly shifted to Victoria Starmer.
“By the way, your first lady—well, I always say first lady—she’s respected all over the United States,” Trump said, clearly enjoying the spotlight. Then came a dig wrapped in flattery.
Gesturing to Keir, he added with a grin, “I don’t know what he’s doing.”
Trump kept the compliments coming: “She’s as respected as him.
I don’t want to say more—I’ll get myself in trouble.
But she’s a great woman and is very highly respected.”
Another Nod Indoors
Later, as the two delegations moved inside, Trump circled back to Victoria once more, telling reporters, “He’s got a perfect wife, and that’s never easy to achieve, right?”
The prime minister took it all in stride, joking, “I’ll take no credit for that.”
A Wide-Ranging Conversation with Reporters
The meeting wasn’t all charm and chuckles, though.
Once seated with their teams, Trump and Starmer spoke for over an hour in front of the press.
Topics ranged from the ongoing war in Gaza to wind energy to, surprisingly, Jeffrey Epstein.
A New Ultimatum for Putin
Trump also revisited his stance on the war in Ukraine.
A month ago, he gave Russian President Vladimir Putin a 50-day window to end the conflict. Now, he’s ready to speed things up.
“I’m going to make a new deadline of about 10 or 12 days from today,” Trump announced.
“There’s no reason in waiting. I want to be generous, but we just don’t see any progress being made.”
The war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022, continues to rage on, with Putin’s drone and missile strikes showing no signs of stopping.
Starmer Keeps Cool Amid Trump Spotlight
While Starmer kept his composure throughout, it was clear that Trump was enjoying being the center of attention—not just for his political takes, but also for his unusually enthusiastic admiration for the UK prime minister’s wife.
The meeting may have been about diplomacy, but it turned out to be just as much about theatrics.
And that’s exactly the way Trump seems to like it.
