On Thursday, July 14, personnel from the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (Hawks) detained a 33-year-old truck driver in Hammarsdale, KwaZulu-Natal.

The Pietermaritzburg Serious Organized Crime unit and the Hammarsdale police station received a tip about a truck that was unloading cargo at a nearby warehouse, according to Hawks spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo.

“They went to the mentioned warehouse and searched there. 35 kilograms of crystal meth, with a street worth of almost R5.2 million, were discovered when unpacking crates, according to Mhlongo.

The truck driver was detained and accused of trafficking drugs.

On Friday, he is scheduled to show up in front of the Hammarsdale Magistrate’s Court.

Unrelated to this incident, a 44-year-old truck driver and another suspect were detained this week in connection with a khat drug bust in the Northern and Western Capes, respectively.

As was previously mentioned, the arrests happened as a result of information that Kimberley’s Crime Intelligence Counter Narcotics received about a truck that was delivering drugs from Gauteng to Cape Town via the Northern Cape city.
