The Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Njabulo Nzuza accompanied by Gauteng Health MEC, Dr Nomathemba Mokgethi will, on Friday, 18 February 2022, open a Home Affairs office at the Rahima Moosa Hospital in Johannesburg as part of government’s early birth registration programme.
In terms of the legislation, all births must be registered within 30 days to ensure that entry into the population register is regulated and its integrity is maintained.
To this end, the Department of Home Affairs continues to extend its footprint by opening offices at health facilities to make it convenient for parents to register their newly born babies within the prescribed time frame.
Deputy Minister Nzuza will use the occasion to encourage all parents to register their children immediately where the birth occurrence is at a health facility that is empowered to register and issue birth certificates on the spot.
The registration and documenting of children early ensures that their identity and status as citizens are recognised for the rest of their lives.
In this way, they are visible with the capacity to exercise their civic rights, access government services and participate fully in the economy.
This further enables government to draw accurate population information that is vital for planning and research.
Members of the media are invited as follows:
Date: Friday, 18 February 2022
Time: 09h00
Venue: Rahima Moosa Hospital, Johannesburg
