The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has taken proactive measures to address increasing water levels at the Vaal Dam by opening a second sluice gate on Friday, March 28, 2025.
This action aims to release excess water and maintain the dam’s water level at a safe operational limit.
Current Water Levels and Outflow Rates
As of the latest reports, the Vaal Dam’s water level stands at 106.52%, prompting the DWS to implement controlled outflows.
The two open sluice gates now release approximately 240 cubic meters per second (m³/s), effectively reducing the water level towards the target of 105%.
These measures are designed to prevent any risk of overtopping and ensure the safety of downstream areas. Central News
Impact on Bloemhof Dam
The increased outflows from the Vaal Dam have necessitated adjustments at the Bloemhof Dam.
The DWS has raised the outflow rate from Bloemhof Dam by 100 m³/s, bringing it to a total of 350.97 m³/s.
This adjustment accommodates the additional water expected from the Vaal Dam and helps maintain Bloemhof’s water level below its full capacity of 100%.
