Delta State Commences Environmental Cleanliness Campaign

Nigeria – In its determination to keep the state clean, the Delta State Waste Management Board on Friday commenced the clearing of refuse from Asaba to Agbor, on the Onitsha – Benin Highway and from Asaba to Kwale, on the Asaba – Ughelli Highway.

Flagging off the exercise in Asaba, the Chairman of the Waste Management Board, Hon Emmanuel Chinye, said it was part of the Board’s mandate to rid the highways of refuse indiscriminately disposed of by road users in order not to create a perception of dirtiness for the state.

Hon Chinye noted that it was a it common habit of passengers and other road users to drop off trash from moving vehicles onto the road, which often accummulated into heaps of refuse or littered along the way over time, describing the habit as a bad one.

He said the exercise in the Agbor axis would end at the Alifekede boundary with Edo state, pointing out that enough labourers and equipment had been mobilized for the clean up exercise.

The DSWMB Chairman stated that efforts would be intensified at sensitizing the people and enforcing the relevant environmental laws, in order to change the attitude of the people towards the environment, insisting that people must take ownership of their environment and keep it clean at all times.

Hon Chinye said a reasonable level of success had been achieved in Asaba and the environs with respect to checking indiscriminate dumping of refuse, revealing that the PSP initiative had helped significantly, with the Task Force on Environmental Sanitation giving the needed support, while the Board’s partnership with the Asaba Communty Youth Council had helped in reducing the dumping of waste in unauthorised places at night.

He spoke on plans to zone Private Sector Participants to areas yet to be covered by the home collection arrangement as part of efforts to continually keep the state clean.
