Dyson has a unique naming scheme for its stick vacuums, which doesn’t follow a chronological order.
Sometimes, the company skips numbers or introduces a lower number as a later model than a higher one.
Despite the numbers generally growing larger with each release, it’s still difficult to predict the next model.
To make matters more complicated, Dyson has a lot of sub-models with varying numbers of included tool attachments and accessories, and each new release tends to introduce even more.
Detect refers to the laser detection system that measures particle size and count to customize suction power.
It’s part of the name of the V15 Detect and V12 Detect Slim.
Absolute is typically the most comprehensive version with the most attachments, such as brush nozzles, crevice attachments, and motorized roller heads for tough grit.
However, the specific attachments vary based on the parent model.
Allergy used to indicate that a vacuum had an upgraded filter that trapped 99.99% of bacteria and dust to expel cleaner air than regular models.
However, after the V7, all Dyson stick vacuums started including these upgraded filters. Thus, it’s largely a legacy designation that hasn’t been used on newer models.
Motorhead is a low-end sub-model that comes with a motorized head, a couple of basic brush and crevice tools, and little else.
Dyson has since come up with other names for basic sub-models.
Origin, Fluffy, and Animal are sub-models that come with relatively few attachments.
The Fluffy and Animal don’t include any attachments specific to cleaning up after pets.
Rather, these designations have become shorthand for a “base model with fewer attachments.”
The Origin name is more straightforward.
Dyson sometimes combines sub-model names as well.
Generally, the more names a model has, the more attachments it includes.
For example, the V8 Animal Pro comes with more attachments than the Animal, and the Animal Pro+ includes even more than that.
If you’re in the market for a Dyson stick vacuum, it’s essential to pay attention to the sub-models and attachments included to ensure you’re getting the features you need.
