David Byrne rides through downtown New York on a mountain bike while promoting his first solo album in seven years

It’s not every day you run into a music legend. On Monday afternoon, passersby in downtown New York might have seen a casually dressed cyclist gliding through the streets on a Specialized Rockhopper mountain bike, seemingly enjoying a leisurely ride.

With his grey hair peeking out and sporting a simple white roll neck under a burgundy vest, he looked far removed from the flamboyant oversized suits that defined the 1980s.

Yet for those in the know, there was no mistaking him: it was Talking Heads frontman David Byrne, 73, back in the spotlight with his first solo album in seven years.

From Talking Heads to Solo Success

Byrne, as lead singer and primary songwriter of Talking Heads, played a pivotal role in shaping American New Wave music alongside peers like Blondie, Devo, and the B-52’s.

Formed in 1975, the band’s lineup included guitarist and keyboardist Jerry Harrison, bassist Tina Weymouth, and drummer Chris Frantz.

Over nine years, they released eight influential albums, beginning with Talking Heads: 77 in 1977.

Their second album, More Songs About Buildings and Food, solidified their reputation, and hits like Burning Down The House, Road To Nowhere, and Once In A Lifetime continue to resonate more than 40 years later.

The group’s final studio album, Naked, came out in 1988, but it took three years for the band to officially confirm they had disbanded.

Frantz later revealed that even he was caught off guard by Byrne’s departure, reading about it in the Los Angeles Times.

Reunion Rumors and $80 Million Offer

Fans had hoped for a full-scale reunion when the band teased a major announcement in June, but the news turned out to be the premiere of a new music video for their classic song Psycho Killer, featuring Saoirse Ronan.

Last December, the group reportedly declined an $80 million offer from Live Nation for a reunion tour that would have included six to eight concerts and festival appearances.

Apart from a brief 2023 reunion, the band hasn’t performed together since 1984.

Who Is The Sky? Marks Byrne’s Solo Return

Byrne’s first new solo album in seven years, Who Is The Sky?, released on September 5, is a collaboration with the Ghost Train Orchestra.

The project has been met with excitement from fans eager to hear his signature sound once more.

Personal Milestones

In addition to his musical comeback, Byrne shared a personal update: he is engaged to Mala Gaonkar, 55, whom he met over a decade ago while working on The Makers series at California’s Stanford Arts Institute.

Byrne credited Gaonkar as the inspiration for his track Moisturizing Thing, joking about her playful antics and reflecting on the deeper message of how society judges people based on appearance.

Byrne’s previous marriage to artist and designer Adelle Lutz ended in 2004.

They share a daughter, Malu Abeni Valentine, now 35, who became a mother herself in 2018, giving Byrne the joy of becoming a grandfather.
