Wimbledon is known for bringing together some of the biggest names in sports, but this week saw a particularly memorable moment when Stuart Broad and David Beckham unexpectedly bumped into each other at the famous tennis tournament.
Both icons of English sport were spotted looking sharp — dressed almost identically in cream suit jackets, light blue shirts, and dark brown ties — as they settled into the prestigious Royal Box on Centre Court.
It’s not every day you see a cricket legend and a football superstar sharing the same sartorial vibe!
The Awkward Handshake: A Meeting Marked by Injury
What made their meeting even more notable was Beckham’s recent wrist injury.
The former England football captain, 50, was rushed to hospital last week after enduring ‘unbearable’ pain.
Surgeons had to remove a screw from an old wrist injury dating back over two decades, which Beckham sustained while playing for England.
Since then, he’s been sporting a protective cast and sling, clearly limiting his usual firm handshake.
Broad, who retired as one of England’s top fast bowlers, recalled the slightly awkward moment when Beckham reached out for a handshake:
“He had this big plaster cast on his hand, so I wasn’t quite sure how firm to be.
I ended up doing a sort of tappy handshake, which was a bit awkward! But it was a lovely day.”
Friendly Banter from the Commentary Box
Broad was at Wimbledon while on commentary duty during England’s cricket Test against India at Edgbaston.
His co-commentator, former England captain Nasser Hussain, couldn’t resist teasing him about their matching outfits.
“Look at you looking at Becks there, who wore it better? You’ve copied him, haven’t you!” Hussain joked.
Broad fired back with a smile,
“I actually think he’s copied me!”
Other Notable Faces in the Royal Box
Alongside Beckham, fans also spotted Gareth Southgate, England’s football manager, and celebrated English actor Eddie Redmayne enjoying the tennis action.
England Cricket Team Builds Momentum Against India
Meanwhile, back on the cricket pitch, England took a strong 1-0 lead in the Test series with an impressive chase of 371 runs — their second-highest successful target ever.
Early wickets, including dangerous batsmen like KL Rahul and Karun Nair, set the tone before lunch.
India fought back, but England’s Ben Stokes claimed a key wicket, dismissing young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal for 87, bringing the talented Rishabh Pant to the crease.
This Test is part of a crucial phase for England’s cricket, especially with the upcoming Ashes tour in Australia scheduled for later this year.
A win at Edgbaston would put England just one victory away from retaining the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, with three Tests still to play.
