Court Rules on Harassment Campaign That Forced Couple to Sell Their Home in Portchester

A couple’s dream of settling into their forever home turned into a nightmare after their neighbor launched a prolonged harassment campaign, forcing them to sell the house.

The disturbing case, which has now been heard in court, reveals the extreme lengths one neighbor went to in making the lives of the family unbearable.

The Harassment That Drove Them Out

In a shocking series of events, Wendy Lau, a special needs worker, allegedly subjected Abigail Beckett and her fiancé, Stuart Turner, to constant torment.

The harassment, which lasted for 18 months, included loud noise disturbances at all hours of the day and night, including power tools used late into the evening.

According to the court, the disturbances were so intense that they were considered ‘outside of acceptable hours,’ with noise spilling into the early hours of the morning.

Additionally, Lau is said to have engaged in other forms of harassment, including banging on the walls, staring at her neighbors, and even throwing stones at their house.

She also reportedly set up CCTV cameras aimed directly at their property in an apparent attempt to spy on them.

A Home Bought with Excitement, Destroyed by Fear

For Ms. Beckett and Mr. Turner, purchasing their semi-detached home in Portchester, Hampshire, was a dream come true.

However, that dream soon turned into a nightmare after Lau moved into the neighboring bungalow just two weeks later.

According to the victim impact statement presented in court, the couple felt as though they had been “evicted by proxy” from their own home.

“We bought this house with such excitement – it was our first family home together,” Ms. Beckett explained tearfully.

“We have effectively been evicted by proxy from our own home.”

The situation led them to feel so unsafe in their own space that they moved in with Ms. Beckett’s parents in October 2023.

Eventually, they made the painful decision to sell their home and move away from the area entirely.

Lau’s Admission and Defense

Wendy Lau, who is 54 years old and works as a sign language interpreter, admitted to the noise disturbances but denied any malicious intent.

In court, she claimed that some of the noise came from her making tea or a ginger drink, and she insisted that her actions were simply a result of being an inconsiderate neighbor rather than intentionally harassing her neighbors.

Lau’s defense attorney, Casey Chard, further explained that the harassment was not premeditated, and Lau did not think about the consequences of her actions.

“Her actions were not intended to cause the distress that she inevitably has,” Chard said.

He suggested that the installation of CCTV cameras was a form of “tit for tat” after feeling that her neighbors had done the same thing.

The Court’s Ruling and Sentence

Lau pleaded guilty to one charge of stalking involving serious alarm and distress, and the judge acknowledged the significant impact of her behavior.

Judge James Newton-Price KC described Lau’s actions as a “wholly unjustified and sustained harassment of your neighbor,” and he emphasized how it had profoundly affected Ms. Beckett and her family, damaging their mental health.

The judge also pointed out that Lau’s actions had caused the couple to bear the “significant cost” of moving out of their home.

Despite Lau’s lack of previous convictions and her expression of regret, the judge noted that she appeared to minimize the impact of her actions.

As a result, Lau was sentenced to four months in prison, suspended for 12 months.

The judge’s ruling reflects the severity of the harassment and the lasting effect it had on the victims, even though Lau’s actions were not premeditated or carried out with malice.

A Disturbing Legacy for the Family

For Ms. Beckett and her fiancé, the ordeal has left deep scars.

What was meant to be a place to grow old together has become a painful reminder of the harassment they endured.

They have been left questioning why they were targeted, and it will take time for them to process the emotional toll of the past 18 months.

The case highlights the significant mental and emotional strain that harassment and stalking can cause, and the lasting impact on the victims who simply want to live in peace.
