Constitution Hill prepares for highly anticipated return to Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival after missing last year’s race

Racing fans are in for a treat as Constitution Hill prepares to take center stage on the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival.

The Nicky Henderson-trained superstar will once again compete in the prestigious Champion Hurdle, aiming to reclaim the title he so convincingly won in 2023.

After missing last year’s race due to a respiratory infection, Constitution Hill is back in action and remains the firm favorite, currently priced at 8/13 with Paddy Power.

However, his return is far from a guaranteed victory, with stiff competition coming from a strong field of Irish challengers, most notably Gordon Elliott’s rising star, Brighterdaysahead.

A Proven Champion with a Point to Prove

Constitution Hill’s dominance in the Champion Hurdle two years ago was nothing short of spectacular.

His nine-length demolition of State Man cemented his status as one of the most gifted hurdlers in recent history.

Since returning this season, he has picked up right where he left off, securing wins in both the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton and the Unibet Hurdle at Cheltenham’s Trials Day.

Despite these victories, questions linger about whether he can replicate his 2023 form.

A slight mistake at the final hurdle in his last race sparked speculation about whether he is still the same unbeatable force.

While his performances suggest he’s back at his best, some experts remain cautious.

Concerns Over Constitution Hill’s Fitness

At the Ultimate Cheltenham Preview Night, racing pundit Johnny Dineen voiced concerns about Constitution Hill’s ability to deliver another dominant performance.

He argued that the biggest challenge for the gelding isn’t his rivals—it’s his own physical condition.

“I think the biggest danger to Constitution Hill is himself,” Dineen said.

“If he’s as good as he was two years ago, he wins. But if you’re betting on this race, you’re betting on his well-being rather than anything else.

I have a feeling he won’t be at that level. He’s had wind operations, colic, and other issues we don’t even know about.”

Trainer Tony Mullins echoed similar sentiments, suggesting that while Constitution Hill was once seen as an obvious favorite, the race has become much more competitive.

“Three weeks ago, I thought he was a slam dunk,” Mullins admitted.

“But now, with Brighterdaysahead in the mix, it’s shaping up to be a fascinating Champion Hurdle.

If Lossiemouth runs, I don’t see her as a major threat, but State Man is still a solid contender.

What looked like a one-sided race has suddenly become very exciting.”

A Perfect Preparation for a Historic Comeback?

Not everyone shares the doubts surrounding Constitution Hill.

Racing analyst Lydia Hislop believes all signs point to a triumphant return.

She dismissed concerns over his fitness and argued that Henderson’s careful planning has put the gelding in peak condition.

“Everything we’ve seen and heard about Constitution Hill suggests he’s exactly where he needs to be,” Hislop stated.

“Since the Christmas Hurdle, the team couldn’t be happier with how his preparation has gone.

He’s in top form, and there’s every reason to believe he can defend his title.”
