In a dramatic turn of events, a 39-year-old Mozambican man was caught and brutally attacked by a group of residents in Redcliffe, KwaZulu-Natal, after allegedly attempting to rape a 29-year-old South African woman on Tuesday, May 13.
The incident unfolded in broad daylight, leading to a swift response from local authorities.
Reaction to the Crime and Mob Attack
The community quickly reacted after receiving reports of a man being attacked by a mob on Valley View Drive.
The Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) was notified around 16:51 and rushed to the scene.
When officers arrived, they found the suspect badly injured, with visible blunt force trauma and whip marks all over his head and body.
By the time police arrived, the crowd had dispersed.
Woman Identifies Alleged Attacker
Upon further investigation, officers spoke to residents from a nearby informal settlement and traced the alleged victim back to her home.
The woman recounted the terrifying ordeal, explaining that the suspect had entered her tuck shop and waited until all her customers had left.
It was then that he allegedly assaulted her, dragging her into a room and attempting to rape her.
Her desperate screams attracted the attention of nearby residents, who rushed to help.
Community Pursues and Captures the Suspect
In an act of quick thinking, the suspect fled on foot as the woman’s screams echoed through the neighborhood. However, the residents weren’t far behind.
Several people gave chase, and as the pursuit gained momentum, more community members joined in.
The mob eventually caught up with the man on Valley View Drive, where they allegedly began assaulting him before alerting the authorities.
Police Take Over the Case
Once RUSA officers arrived, they took control of the situation and handed the suspect over to the Verulam South African Police Service (SAPS).
Both the alleged attempted rape and the mob assault are now under investigation by local authorities.
The community’s response has raised questions about vigilante justice, and the case is expected to develop further in the coming days.
