Commentary: Celebrating Educational Feats Of The Obiano Administration

It is true that administrations come and go but the feats achieved by anyone are not easily forgotten as such achievements become letters written on the slate of time which cannot be erased or obliterated. This has prompted the Anambra Achievers Legacy (Akululu Uno Amaka 2021) to endear itself to the feats achieved by the Obiano-led administration.

Anambra Achievers’ Legacy Award is organized as part of the activities to commemorate Anambra State at 30, with the celebration of other thirty indigenous achievers who have invested heavily in the state. The award is a quadrennial event and private sector initiative that seeks to immortalize the indelible achievements of distinguished sons and daughters of Anambra State – the “1st Eleven” in their various fields of endeavor.

Obiano’s administration has recorded great achievements in all sectors of the state’s economy, particularly in the education sector. These accomplishments brought to bear the truism of a Chinese adage that says ‘‘If you are planning for a year, sow rice; if you are planning for a decade, plant trees; if you are planning for a lifetime, educate people’’

Indeed, Obiano has planned for lifetime in giving Ndi Anambra a befitting education. No wonder these had translated into successes recorded by Anambra State students, both at the national and international levels. Recently, the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja nominated four teachers as awardees in the President’s Teachers and School Excellence Award in 2021.

In 2017, Mr. Clement Okodo, a Primary School teacher at Abagana, won the overall best teacher in Nigeria. He went home with a brand new car. Amala Ezenwa, a head teacher at Awada, Obosi, in 2018, took home another brand new car when she won the overall best administrator in Nigeria, while Dr. Mrs. Vera Ikegwuani of the Anglican Girls Grammar School Onitsha, won the fourth position in best administrator category, taking home several prizes. These and many more fell under the teachers’ category.

On the student/pupils category, the tract record of success soars to the high heavens. The Obiano-led administration ingrained in the students and pupils the unquenchable zeal for healthy competition, thus enabling them to win laurels.

This administration, through the effort of the Commissioner for Basic Education, Prof Kate Omenugha, has brought about a complete departure from credits level score in English and Mathematics of 61 percent in 2014 to 74 percent in 2019.

Equally, Anambra received commendation from WAEC for making history as the first state in Nigeria to install CCTV cameras in examination halls of Secondary Schools. Team Anambra beat Katong Convent School in the first Nigeria-Singapore debate. Three Anambra students were among the team Nigeria that beat Barbados 3-0 at the world school debate in Indonesia.

Regina Pacis Secondary School, Onitsha won gold at Technovation Pitching Challenge in Silicon Valley, USA, while St. John’s Science and Technical College, Alor won bronze at the Tunisia International Festival of Engineering Science and Technology. Queen of Rosary College, Onitsha emerged the global prize winner at the University of Delaware Diamond Challenge Global summit.

Furthermore, the Obiano administration has continued to motivate teachers through promotion to level 16 and payment of core subject and hard reached area allowance as well as capacity building.

In the light of the foregoing, the Anambra Achievers Legacy (Akululu uno Amaka) is poised at honouring Governor Willie Obiano [Akpokuodike] for this landmark and symbolic achievements. The event is slated for December 30, 2021 at the Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka where thirty indigenous achievers who have invested heavily in projects that have provided job opportunities and increased the revenue base and profile of our dear state would be celebrated even as we commemorate the new Anambra State at 30.
