Moving to a new country is often a culture shock, but for comedian Jenny Tian, relocating from Melbourne to London felt surprisingly familiar.
After spending more than six months in the UK, she took to TikTok to share her unexpected realization: the two cities are practically identical.
London and Melbourne Feel Like the Same Place
In her now-viral video, Jenny humorously questioned why no one had told her that London and Melbourne are essentially the same city.
She pointed out that both are consistently ranked among the world’s most liveable cities yet share common downsides, like unpredictable weather and an abundance of seagulls.
“They’ve each got their own unique transport system—the Melbourne tram, the London Tube—but it’s basically the same thing,” she joked.
Jenny also noted the seemingly endless cultural exchange between the two cities, with Australians flocking to London and Brits heading to Melbourne.
“It’s like the world’s most useless cultural exchange,” she quipped, adding, “Unless you’re going to Japan, just stay where you are.”
A Debate Breaks Out in the Comments
Her bold comparison sparked a wave of reactions, with people on both sides of the debate. Some completely agreed with her assessment.
“This may be the truest thing I’ve heard all day,” one person commented.
Others, however, strongly disagreed. “Melbourne’s weather is unpredictable, but at least we get sunlight,” one person argued.
Another who had lived in both cities said, “London has an unreal vibe that you just can’t compare.”
Others emphasized that Melbourne offers better outdoor spaces. “At least the sun hits here.
We have great green areas and amazing beaches if you step outside the city,” one user pointed out.
London’s Growing Reputation as an Unsafe City
While Jenny’s lighthearted take focused on the similarities, others in the comments brought up London’s growing reputation as an unsafe and expensive place to live.
In recent years, seasoned travelers and even some locals have warned that the British capital isn’t what it used to be.
Reports of rising crime and skyrocketing living costs have led many to rethink their plans of moving there.
A TikTok user who had recently left London lamented the city’s decline, stating, “This is the worst London has been in my lifetime.
People are paying through the nose to live here while dealing with violent crime right outside their front door.”
Is It Still Worth Moving to London?
The debate over whether London and Melbourne are truly alike remains unsettled.
While some argue that the cities share cultural and structural similarities, others insist that London’s energy, history, and challenges make it a world apart.
For those considering a move, Jenny Tian’s advice is clear: if you’re swapping Melbourne for London or vice versa, you might not notice much of a change—so why not save the airfare?
