Colorado Teenager Silas Mayes Experiences Life-Threatening Illness Following Consumption of McDonald’s Quarter Pounder Linked to E.coli Contamination

A 17-year-old from Colorado, Silas Mayes, recently endured a frightening health scare that left him feeling like there were “knives in my stomach.”

This ordeal unfolded after he enjoyed a Quarter Pounder at McDonald’s, a fast food favorite for him, during a lunch break with his father.

Tragically, he isn’t alone—another 15 individuals have fallen ill due to the same outbreak.

A Painful Night

On October 7, Silas and his dad visited McDonald’s, where everything seemed perfectly normal about the burger he ate.

However, just three days later, he woke up in the middle of the night, gripped by severe cramps and bloody diarrhea.

“It was the worst pain I have ever experienced,” Silas shared with DailyMail.com.

His worried mother, Lera Davidson, rushed him to the emergency room, where doctors provided him with pain relief and fluids to help with dehydration.

Despite being sent home, Silas’s condition worsened.

He struggled to keep down food or water, leading to another hospital visit where he was treated with stronger medications, including fentanyl.

The Bigger Picture

This incident is part of a larger E.coli outbreak linked to McDonald’s, which has now affected at least 90 people.

As health officials report, 27 individuals have been hospitalized, and sadly, one person has died.

At least two of the affected, including a young girl and an elderly woman, are now battling kidney failure.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed that the outbreak stems from chopped onions used in the burgers, prompting a recall that has significantly reduced public risk.

Struggling to Recover

Silas has since been discharged but remains quite weak, having lost 10 pounds and feeling fatigued.

Before this incident, he was active, frequently engaging in sports like skateboarding.

However, the lingering effects of the illness have left him unable to pursue his hobbies.

“I haven’t been able to pick up any of my hobbies again or anything because of how sick I’ve been,” he lamented.

On October 10, just days after the initial hospital visit, Silas woke his mother, overwhelmed by stomach cramps.

The pain persisted, leading to a second hospital admission for further treatment.

Ongoing Symptoms

Now, nearly three weeks after he first showed symptoms, Silas is still struggling.

“The major symptoms are gone, but the nausea and fatigue are still there.

He is very weak,” his mother described. Although Silas is attempting to return to his active lifestyle, he finds himself too weak to skateboard, much to his frustration.

In light of the outbreak, McDonald’s has recalled the Quarter Pounder from a fifth of its restaurants, though it has returned to some locations without onions.

Other chains, including Burger King and Taco Bell, have stopped using onions as a precautionary measure.

Distrust and Legal Considerations

In the aftermath of Silas’s illness, Lera Davidson expressed her deep distrust for McDonald’s, stating, “We won’t be grabbing a McDonald’s burger or burger from anywhere anymore.”

She is now dedicated to preparing food at home, meticulously washing everything for safety.

The Mayes family has not received any communication from McDonald’s since the incident and is considering legal action against the fast food giant.

They believe it is vital to raise awareness about this outbreak, especially after Silas’s case was linked to the ongoing investigation by local health authorities.

Support During Hard Times

Throughout this challenging experience, Silas has received unwavering support from his girlfriend, who has stood by him during his recovery.

He is one of many victims speaking out, with reports of other affected individuals, including a 15-year-old girl and a mother from Nebraska.

A man in Colorado has even filed a lawsuit against McDonald’s, adding to the mounting concerns surrounding the outbreak.

As the investigation continues, Silas’s story highlights the potential dangers lurking in fast food meals, reminding everyone of the importance of food safety.
