Cold front forces emergency response teams into action across Cape provinces as floods snowfall and high winds hit hard

Just when South Africans thought winter might ease up, another heavy-hitting cold front is set to slam into the Western and Northern Cape – and this one’s packing serious punch.

From stormy seas to the potential for snowfall, it’s shaping up to be a dramatic few days across the southern parts of the country.

Cold Front to Hit Western Cape First

According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), the cold front is expected to make landfall on Wednesday, 25 June, affecting the south-western parts of South Africa first.

Residents in the Western Cape are being urged to brace for intense rain, particularly in low-lying and poorly drained areas that could see localized flooding.

By Thursday, the front will sweep inland, bringing a cascade of cold and stormy conditions to the Northern Cape and beyond.

Storm Winds and Possible Snowfall in the Mix

On top of the heavy rain, strong gusts of wind are expected to batter interior regions.

These winds may not only knock down trees but could cause damage to homes and infrastructure.

The colder-than-usual weather might even bring snowfall to the mountains in the Western Cape, with flurries potentially reaching into parts of the Northern Cape’s interior.

So, if you’re planning a road trip through mountain passes – maybe reconsider.

Dangerous Sea Conditions Ahead

The coastal impact could be just as severe.

SAWS is warning of gale-force winds and rough seas, especially along the shores of the Northern and Western Cape.

Waves are expected to rise between 5.5 to 7.5 meters, making it extremely dangerous for small fishing vessels and port activity.

Those planning to be anywhere near the coast should stay updated and steer clear of the shoreline when conditions begin to escalate.

Eastern Cape Next in Line for Disruption

As the system pushes eastward, it’s set to hit the Eastern Cape on Thursday, bringing damaging winds and a big drop in temperatures.

SAWS expects these strong gusts to spread across the interior of the eastern provinces by Friday, with most places plunging into cold to very cold daytime temperatures.

Devastation Still Fresh from Recent Front

This latest forecast follows on the heels of a brutal cold front that tore through the Eastern Cape recently.

That storm left a tragic trail behind: over 90 people dead, hundreds displaced, and critical infrastructure like water and electricity systems in ruins.

Emergency services are still combing through affected areas, trying to recover and provide support.

Be Prepared and Stay Warm

With yet another cold front rolling in, the big question is: how are you planning to stay warm and safe this time around?

Make sure to charge your devices, prep your emergency supplies, check in on vulnerable neighbours, and stay updated with weather alerts.
