Climate activist group, Just Stop Oil, which is a coalition of groups working together to stop new fossil fuel licensing and production, staged a “slow march” from Westminster Abbey, where the coronation of the King and Queen Consort was set to take place.
The Metropolitan Police were present and said they would intervene if required to minimise disruption to Londoners.
The group has said it will march every weekday and Saturday until the government abandons its plan to licence over 100 new fossil fuel projects.
This is the latest action after 91 supporters of Just Stop Oil marched from four different locations in Lambeth and Westminster on Bank Holiday Monday, initiating a second week of daily slow marches that caused disruption across London last week.
Analysis: Climate activists Just Stop Oil was formed in April 2022 and has since staged several protests.
The group is a coalition of several groups, including Extinction Rebellion and Insulate Britain, and is non-hierarchical, with activists operating in autonomous blocs that share resources but have no formal leadership.
The group’s main objective is to end new licensing and consents for the exploration, development, and production of fossil fuels in the UK.
The group is also calling for the government to stop all new oil and gas projects. The government plans to licence over 100 new oil and gas projects by 2025.
The group favours non-violent civil resistance tactics of social disruption. It has been criticised for its protest methods, such as blocking roads and vandalism.
The group has warned that its protests will continue until their demands are met by the UK government.
