Clemson loss led to $150K NC lottery win

His preferred team lost the game, but he came out on top.

On November 5, after watching the Clemson Tigers lose to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Jacob Strickland decided to try his luck with the Powerball. According to the North Carolina Lottery, he won a massive $150,000 prize.

“As we watched football with some pals, Clemson was being humiliated by Notre Dame,” Strickland recalled.

We joked that we should get lottery tickets because our good fortune could not get any worse.

Strickland, a welder from Asheboro, North Carolina, purchased a $3 “Quick Pick” ticket via Online Play on his smartphone immediately prior to the lottery drawing.

“It was a last-minute decision just prior to the drawing,” he explained to the North Carolina Lottery.

His impulsive decision paid out handsomely. Strickland won $50,000, which was multiplied by a “3X Power Play Multiplier” to total $150,000.

He stated, “It was a day of disbelief because I’ve never won anything before.”

After the big play, Strickland called his mother and sent a screenshot of his victory to his friends who were also rooting for Clemson.

“They all believed I was lying,” he declared.

Strickland claimed his prize on Tuesday and, after federal and state tax withholdings, received a total of $106,560. He stated that he intended to invest a portion of the funds and save the remainder.

Powerball is one of four lottery games in North Carolina for which players can purchase tickets at retail locations, online via the lottery’s website, or via the NC Lottery Official Mobile App.

Mega Millions, Lucky For Life, and Carolina Cash 5 are the other games that offer these options, according to the North Carolina Lottery.
