City of Cape Town Announces Series of 14 Hour Weekend Power Outages in Green Point and Muizenberg to Upgrade Electrical Infrastructure

If you live in Green Point or Muizenberg, get ready for some planned power cuts over the next few weekends.

The City of Cape Town is rolling out a series of scheduled outages to upgrade its high-voltage electrical systems—work that’s crucial for keeping the city’s power supply reliable in the long run.

What to Expect in Green Point Over Four Saturdays

Starting on May 17, 2025, and running through June 7, Green Point residents will face 14-hour power outages every Saturday night.

Each outage will begin at 6 PM and last until 8 AM the next morning, giving crews the overnight window they need to safely carry out important maintenance.

The city has shared detailed maps outlining exactly which neighborhoods will be affected, but it’s worth noting that areas nearby could also experience interruptions, so stay prepared.

Planned Power Interruptions Also Affect Muizenberg Residents

Muizenberg won’t be left out of this either.

Power outages are scheduled for two weekend nights: May 31 to June 1, and again from June 14 to June 15.

These will follow the same 6 PM to 8 AM timeframe.

In case any hiccups or delays pop up, Cape Town officials have already planned backup dates to complete the work without dragging out the inconvenience.

Important Safety Tips and What You Should Do

Since this is complex, high-voltage work, there’s a chance that power restoration could take longer than expected.

City crews promise to work as efficiently as possible, but it’s best to be prepared for some flexibility.

Residents are strongly advised to turn off all electrical appliances and inverters before power comes back on.

This helps prevent damage from power surges or system overload.

Also, the city warns that electricity could be restored unexpectedly at any time, so it’s safest to assume all wiring is live and to avoid handling electrical systems during the outage.

Staying Informed and Ready

To keep up to date, residents should follow official City of Cape Town communication channels and call the city’s Call Centre if they have questions or need to report issues.

How Will You Manage the Outages?

With weekend plans possibly disrupted, how are you preparing for the blackouts? Are you setting up backup power solutions, planning offline activities, or just taking it as a chance to unplug?
