Christopher Nkunku opens up about injuries and failed Chelsea spell as he seals £36m transfer to AC Milan in Italy

Christopher Nkunku is leaving behind the struggles of English football and embracing a new beginning in Serie A.

After a frustrating two years at Chelsea, the French forward has officially joined AC Milan in a £36 million move — and he’s already sounding optimistic about what lies ahead.

From High Expectations to Injury Setbacks

When Chelsea signed Nkunku from RB Leipzig in 2023 for £52 million, fans had high hopes he would light up Stamford Bridge.

But almost immediately, his journey hit turbulence.

“I got injured straight away and was out for five months, and then I suffered a relapse when I came back,” Nkunku admitted during his Milan presentation.

His time in London quickly turned into a battle with fitness rather than a showcase of his talent.

Frustrations in His Second Season

Despite working hard in his second year, things didn’t click.

“I did everything to be ready, but the coach made his choices,” he explained.

Though he never stopped believing in his ability, consistent minutes and momentum never came his way at Chelsea.

“I’m the same player I’ve always been. I just want to play with a smile,” he said, hinting that the environment in Milan feels more suited to his style and spirit.

Why AC Milan Felt Like the Right Move

For Nkunku, the decision to move to Italy wasn’t difficult.

“When AC Milan called me, I didn’t have to think too much — I immediately knew it was the perfect option,” he said.

Now 27, the forward feels physically and mentally ready for the challenge.

Having already started training with the squad, he’s eager to build chemistry on the pitch and within the dressing room.

A French Connection in Milan

Nkunku won’t be starting from scratch entirely — he’ll be linking up with fellow Frenchmen Mike Maignan and Adrien Rabiot.

For him, settling in is about more than just football. “The first step is to get to know my teammates and build bonds with them and the coach,” he said.

“At the end of the year, we’ll see where we’ve got to.”

A Player with Something to Prove

Determined to show his true level, Nkunku stressed his competitive edge.

“I know what I want, and I always try to be the best version of myself. I can give a lot to this team,” he said.

His preferred role? An attacking midfielder, though he’s willing to adapt to whatever formation Milan use.

“The coach will decide,” he added. “I can’t wait to play.”

Milan’s Rocky Start and What Comes Next

AC Milan’s new campaign hasn’t been smooth sailing.

After finishing eighth last season, they began this year with a disappointing home defeat to Cremonese but bounced back with a win over Lecce.

Fans won’t have to wait long to see Nkunku in action.

He’s targeting his debut after the international break, when Milan host Bologna on September 14.
