Children leave bedridden parent to die in ‘filthy conditions’

After being discovered in ‘filthy circumstances’ at her house, a crippled and bedridden lady in Texas passed away. Her three adult children were detained as a result of the terrible discovery.

According to a news statement from the neighbourhood sheriff’s office on Monday, Patricia Martinez, 57, passed away on Saturday in a hospital in San Antonio, the seventh-largest city in the nation, after Bexar County officers rescued her from her house on Thursday.

The mother was found to be disabled, with mould growing on her body, when deputies arrived to help her last week after receiving a call from Adult Protective Services (APS). She had renal failure as a result of the negligence.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar told News 4 San Antonio on Friday, “She was discovered wearing an adult diaper filled with excrement in a dried condition where it was literally creating illnesses in other portions of her body.”

Martinez’s condition deteriorated after APS, which responds to allegations of known or suspected abuse or neglect, became concerned about “a precipitous fall in her level of health,” the sheriff said.

The victim’s children, Pedro Luis Carrero, 18, Roxanna Carrero, 24, and Oscar Dominguez, 37, were all detained and charged with severe bodily harm to a handicapped person.

According to Salazar, the offence is a first-degree felony in Texas. However, the Sheriff’s Office has not said how APS learned of the woman’s health or the specific limitations she had.

Martinez’s three children were her carers and all three of them resided with their mother in the family home, according to the sheriff, who said that “it looked none of them were doing what they were supposed to be doing.”

They were in charge of organising and scheduling her medical visits, as well as giving her care such as feeding and bathing.

Salazar said to KENS5 that “it’s probable she’ll pay with her life for their carelessness.” When their time comes, “God have pity on their souls.”

The three suspects, who are still detained in the Bexar County Jail, have each been given a $85,000 bond.

Salazar said he was still unclear whether the woman’s death would result in charges being upgraded to murder.

Salazar said that Martinez had been receiving government assistance before she passed away, but it’s unclear if her kids had set aside money to cover their mother’s medical expenses.

After authorities searched the family’s house on Thursday, an unnamed neighbour on Caballo Canyon told KHOU that “They had assault guns and they had shields.” The policemen saw the offender opening the garage. They pointed the rifle in his direction and instructed him to raise his hands so they could make an arrest.

Martinez and her children have been in the home for about a year and a half, according to Stanley Cooper, who lives directly next door to Martinez’s family.
