Two students of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic have been crushed to death by a truck

In a heart-wrenching incident near Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, two students lost their lives after being struck by a truck.

The incident occurred just a short distance from the school’s premises, near Ikot Inyang village junction, along Aba Road in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area.

Details of the Accident

On Monday, January 9, the truck driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, leading to a tragic collision with the female students.

The victims, Abasifreke Okon and Irene Edwin, hailed from Ikot Abasi and Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Areas, respectively.

Both were ND 2 Science Laboratory Technology students and close friends. They were preparing for practical examinations scheduled for January 10, with plans to complete their academic program following the exams.

Postponement of Examinations and Grief Among Students

In the aftermath of the devastating incident, the polytechnic’s management took the somber decision to postpone the scheduled examinations.

The loss of Abasifreke Okon and Irene Edwin cast a shadow of grief over the academic community, leaving students and faculty deeply affected by the tragedy.

Official Response and Cautionary Message

Confirming the accident, Matthew Olonisaye, the Akwa Ibom State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), attributed the incident to reckless driving.

He emphasized the importance of drivers adhering to road safety rules and urged them to prioritize the maintenance of their vehicles.

Olonisaye conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and stressed the preventable nature of accidents, emphasizing that responsible driving practices and regular vehicle maintenance could prevent such tragic losses.

The accident serves as a poignant reminder of the critical need for road safety awareness and compliance with regulations to safeguard lives on the roads.
