It only took one tweet to send Chelsea fans into a momentary meltdown.

The club’s official X (formerly Twitter) account cheekily announced that Liverpool had signed “Sam Kerr” — and for a few tense seconds, supporters were convinced the Matildas superstar was heading to Merseyside.

But don’t worry, Blues fans. The headline-grabbing announcement wasn’t about that Sam Kerr.

The Real Story Behind the Tweet

What Chelsea was actually referring to was Scottish midfielder Sam Kerr — the other footballer who happens to share the same name as the Australian captain.

The Scottish Kerr had originally joined Liverpool on loan from Bayern Munich back in January, and that deal has now been made permanent.

Chelsea’s social media team clearly couldn’t resist a little mischief.

Shortly after the tweet began circulating and stirring anxiety online, they followed it up with a second post revealing the twist.

It read: “Ohhhhhh you thought…” alongside a photo of the actual new Liverpool signing.

Fans Fell for It — Hard

While the joke landed well for some, others were quick to admit they weren’t laughing—at least not at first.

One fan replied, “Stop it Admin, my heart stopped for a few secs,” while another admitted, “Okay that was a stressful couple seconds not gonna lie!” A third added with a mix of panic and humor, “This is July!!! We are not in April anymore!!”

The Real Sam Kerr Is Still Blue

As for the real Sam Kerr—the Australian striker who’s been a powerhouse for Chelsea since moving from the Chicago Red Stars in 2020—she isn’t going anywhere.

In fact, she’s still on the road to recovery from a long-term ACL injury that’s kept her sidelined since January 2024.

Though she hasn’t been on the pitch, Kerr has been in the public eye lately.

She was recently seen out with her fiancée, former West Ham United player Kristie Mewis. The couple, who began dating in 2020, recently celebrated the arrival of their baby boy, Jagger, in May 2025.

Meanwhile, the Scottish Kerr Is on the Rise

The other Sam Kerr — the Scottish one — is carving out a name for herself in the Women’s Super League.

Since her initial loan to Liverpool, she’s made 11 appearances and even bagged her first goal during a win over West Ham at the Chigwell Construction Stadium.

While Chelsea fans were briefly duped, the future looks bright for both versions of Sam Kerr — just on opposite sides of the rivalry.
