The stars gathered for the world premiere of Paolo Sorrentino’s latest film, La Grazia.
The festival chose this work from one of Italy’s most acclaimed filmmakers to open the event.
The film stars Toni Servillo as a fictional Italian president wrestling with the moral dilemma of signing a bill permitting euthanasia while mourning his late wife.
Sorrentino revealed that the story was inspired by a real-life case of an Italian president who pardoned a man convicted of killing his wife, who suffered from Alzheimer’s. He explained:
“This was a moral dilemma that was interesting to tell.
I have thought for years that moral dilemmas are very interesting for storytelling.”
