After a whirlwind stint in Morocco and a brief taste of Club World Cup action, Cassius Mailula is back in Toronto—but the question on everyone’s mind is: what’s next for the talented young attacker?

Mailula, who made a name for himself at Mamelodi Sundowns, has been navigating his football career overseas for just over a year now.

But with uncertain game time at Toronto FC and a growing desire to break into Europe, his future remains wide open—and fans are watching closely.

A Year Abroad and a Detour Through Morocco

When Mailula first joined Toronto FC from Sundowns, the move was seen as a big step forward.

But things didn’t quite pan out as expected.

To find regular minutes on the pitch, he was loaned out to Wydad Athletic Club—one of Morocco’s biggest football institutions.

During his time at Wydad, Mailula gave fans a glimpse of what he’s capable of.

He scored during the FIFA Club World Cup and showed real attacking spark.

Unfortunately, the team didn’t make it past the group stage, cutting his World Cup adventure short.

Now, it’s back to Canada—but with no guarantees of consistent game time, Mailula’s career path feels very much in limbo.

Dreaming Bigger and Keeping the Door Open to South Africa

In a candid chat with Andile Ncube on Metro FM, the 24-year-old opened up about his ambitions—and whether or not a return to the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) is on the cards.

Mailula made it clear: his focus is still on playing abroad.

Ideally, he hopes to climb the ladder and make it into a top-tier European league.

But when asked if he’d ever come back to the PSL, he didn’t rule it out.

If the right offer comes along? He’ll consider it.

But it has to be the right move, at the right time.

No Love Lost for Kaizer Chiefs or Pirates—But His Heart Stays with Sundowns

Fans may be wondering if a blockbuster move to Kaizer Chiefs or Orlando Pirates could be in the pipeline.

But Mailula didn’t hesitate—his loyalty remains with Mamelodi Sundowns.

“I love Sundowns… Sundowns is home,” he said, his voice full of sincerity.

“Even the president and the chairman know—that’s my first love.”

If there ever were to be a return to South African football, Mailula says he’d talk to Sundowns first.

Only if that didn’t work out would he consider any other options.

What’s Next for Mailula?

As he prepares to return to Toronto FC, Mailula faces a familiar challenge—earning his spot in a competitive squad.

Whether he stays in the MLS, seeks a new loan, or explores Europe, one thing is clear: he’s not done chasing his football dreams.

And while a PSL comeback isn’t off the table, for now, the young star has his eyes firmly set on the global stage.
