Cape Winelands Airport Embarks on Final Round of Environmental Assessments to Pave Way for Future Development

Excitement is building as Cape Winelands Airport enters its final stage of assessments, bringing it one step closer to becoming a key part of South Africa’s infrastructure.

Final Stage of Environmental Impact Assessment Underway

As reported by BusinessTech, the airport is now in the fourth and final phase of its Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

This round of public participation, which kicked off on March 19, is a critical step before construction can begin.

The airport’s development has been in the works for some time, and with this phase wrapping up, ground-breaking is expected to happen later this year, assuming all necessary regulatory approvals come through.

The project’s completion is still a few years away, with the airport targeted to be fully operational by late 2027 or early 2028.

What the Cape Winelands Airport Will Offer

The Cape Winelands Airport is set to be a major hub for the region, thanks to a massive R8 billion investment.

The upgrade will feature a 3.5-kilometer runway and a state-of-the-art terminal.

The facility will also include retail outlets, an aircraft hangar, a hotel, and beautiful landscaping that integrates the region’s renowned wine culture.

But that’s not all. The development will offer public spaces such as a plaza, a conference center, an outdoor amphitheater that can hold up to 5,000 people, and a wine-tasting experience for visitors.

There will even be an aviation museum to celebrate the region’s history in aviation.

A Green Touch to Enhance the Experience

The airport will also have a green side. A botanical garden will be part of the controlled airside area, showcasing a wide range of indigenous fynbos.

The design of the space aims to create a welcoming and tranquil environment that honors the natural beauty of the area.

On top of that, the airport will provide modern travel amenities.

Travelers can expect quick and efficient check-in counters equipped with advanced technology to streamline the process.

Spacious waiting lounges with comfortable seating will be available for those looking to relax before their flights.

A Vision for Growth

Deon Cloete, managing director of Cape Winelands Airport, has previously expressed his excitement for the project, noting the many benefits a commercial airport will bring to the region.

“We are really excited about the airport expansion.

There are so many benefits to a commercial airport in this part of the region, and we know that this development will be a catalyst for growth,” Cloete said.

The Future of Airports in South Africa

As the Cape Winelands Airport moves forward, the question arises: does South Africa need more airports?

With growing demand for travel and the need for regional development, the Cape Winelands Airport could be the beginning of a new chapter in the country’s infrastructure.
